LA MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch, discussing “REBEL,” a new live performance piece with James Franco that riffs on the 1955 Nicholas Ray film, opening tomorrow off-site @JF Chen on Highland ——

“It’s one of the most significant things going on right now — not just in art but also in progressive culture — this convergence, the dissolving of boundaries between what is art, what’s music, what is performance,” he says. “This show is film, performance, architecture, painting, sculpture, video; it’s all of these media. And it’s also the convergence between a more elevated fine art culture and popular culture.”

Well, this has been going on for quite a while, of course. The point is, I suppose, that it’s really very mainstream now.

A performance of Aeschylus’ “Prometheus Unbound,” Friday in Syracuse NY —

“A circular wooden platform provides the main stage, while the backdrop is a seven-metre-high tilted disc that can spin around or split down the middle. A ring of scaffolding completes the circle of the tiered amphitheatre to form an elevated walkway behing the stage.”

Desire Outside of the Missionary Position

“Desire and its unsettlements of the soul are as central to John Irving’s work as lost fathers. You could say that our sexual longings are compensatory, and that desire for what is forbidden or taboo is part of the long detective hunt for what we have lost and can never find. Perhaps — but reading Irving, it seems to me that what he is saying about desire outside of the missionary position (a psychic attitude, not a physical preference) is never an apology, nor an explanation.

Desire is democratic; we fall for the wrong people, across age, class, color, gender. Desire is difficult; it messes things up. Desire is defiant; our desires square off against our assumptions, our morality, our conscience and our notion of who we are. There is no doubt that Irving thinks this is a good thing.”

—— JEANETTE WINTERSON, reviewing John Irving’s new novel, “In One Person”.

Correction in NY Times:
“An earlier version of this post included a photo published in error. It showed Andrew Garfield, the actor who played Eduardo Saverin in the movie “The Social Network,” not Mr. Saverin himself.”

My generous friend Grant took me to see this world premiere on its opening Thurs — as the LA Times raves, it was stunning, haunting, beautiful, dense, a little bit crazy, completely unforgettable.
